Derzeit wird Ammoniak vor allem als Grundstoff f\u00fcr D\u00fcngemittel verwendet, k\u00f6nnte jedoch in Zukunft auch vermehrt energetisch genutzt werden: Entweder als Transportmedium f\u00fcr Wasserstoff f\u00fcr die ben\u00f6tigten Importe oder direkt als Brennstoff. Die erprobte Infrastruktur und die g\u00fcnstigen molekularen Eigenschaften, wie beispielsweise eine hohe volumetrische Energiedichte, verschaffen Ammoniak klare Kostenvorteile beim Transport. Andere Derivate wie LOHC oder Methanol sind in der Bereitstellung deutlich teurer. Neben dem Vorteil der Transportierbarkeit l\u00e4sst es sich zudem sehr gut speichern. In Europa ist Deutschland der wichtigste Produzent: Die j\u00e4hrliche Produktion liegt bei etwa 3 Millionen Tonnen. F\u00fcr das Jahr 2050 wird der weltweite Ammoniakbedarf auf mindestens 270 Millionen Tonnen pro Jahr gesch\u00e4tzt. Auch der Bedarf in Deutschland d\u00fcrfte im Zuge des Wasserstoffhochlaufs deutlich steigen. Zur Diskussion stehen dabei sowohl zentrale Anlagen in Hafenn\u00e4he als auch dezentrale, durch bahn- oder binnenschiffangebundene Standorte in unmittelbarer N\u00e4he der Wasserstoffabnehmer.
